Each year at the Annual Ice Lantern Festival from early January through February master craftsmen and artists turn tons of frozen precipitation into a winter wonderland of amazing sculptures of people, animals, birds, buildings, bridges and waterfalls.

There is even an icy replica of the Great Wall. By day the intricate sculptures are transparent. At dusk, colored lanterns inside the ice structures create magical nights.

There are also short cruises on ice sailing boats and for those who dare, a plunge in Harbin’s icy waters or a rousing roll on frozen surfaces removes bad luck of the past year.
