To get to the heart of the real Hanoi, the Old Quarter is the place to be. Dating back 2000 years, this area has at least 36 streets or guilds (possibly more in the past) where different tradesman and craftsmen made and sold their wares. Each street or guild was dedicated to a different trade. Today you’ll still find people hawking their wares, but it’s also home to other shops and restaurants.

For a cheap and easy way of exploring the whole city, opt for the bus, a pedicab or cyclo. There are plenty of taxis, but fares aren’t regulated and some charge extortionate fees for short journeys; haggling is allowable though. Another option is to travel by motorbike. Bike riders are widely available and, as long as you don’t mind riding pillion, it can be an exhilarating experience. Bikes for your sole use can also be hired by the day.
