Hanover was extensively rebuilt after the war, so it’s one of Germany’s more modern cities, but there are still historic sights to see.

The ‘red thread’ route marked on the pavement in the old town takes you to many historic and reconstructed buildings, such as the State Parliament dating from 1636. The baroque preserved Herrenhauser Gardens are very impressive and are home to Europe’s highest foundation (82m), as well as exquisite orchid collections.

In the summer, the city hosts the annual Schutzenfest of marksmen. It attracts thousands of visitors and includes a competition, carnival procession and fireworks.
