The rathaus (town hall) is located in the old town and guided tours take you around many of its rooms. In the old warehouse quarter is the Speicherstadtmuseum, which gives an excellent view of what life for workers here in the past was like.

Amazingly, Hamburg has more bridges than Venice and waterways are a key feature. They cover eight per cent of the surface area and sailing down them is a great way of seeing the centre of town.
