Guadalajara, the capital city of the state of Jalisco, has often been called the most Mexican of the Mexican cities. The historic district offers a quiet retreat with its original buildings from hundreds of years ago, along with the monuments and fountains from the 1500's. Nearby, the mercado is a good place to get souvenirs that are truly Mexican, with its carved leather products, colorful hand-stitched and embroidered clothing and bags, and pottery and other knick knacks.
