An absolute must-see in the Spanish city of Granada (not to be confused with Grenada) is the Alhambra palace and fortress. Part military base and part home to royalty, its name means the ‘red fortress’ – and as soon as you see the buildings, you’ll instantly know why.

The Alhambra is more than just one single building; in fact, the complex contains a host of buildings and monuments, plus lush gardens with foundations where royalty used to relax. Amongst the other key buildings is the Charles V Palace, the Mexuar Palace, the Palace of the Lions (Mohammed V) and the Comares (Yusuf I Palace).

The Alhambra is open daily, in the mornings, for visitors. To appreciate the full extent of the monuments, specialist tours are available; if you want to pay a bit more, you can even get a private tour during the day, or for full atmosphere, at night.
