When visiting Glasgow, you can’t fail to notice the impressive modern architecture designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Charles, an architect, designer and artist, is recognised worldwide as being one of the key creative players of the early 20th century. He made a huge contribution towards architecture and it’s in Glasgow that you’ll find the greatest examples of his work. Many of the buildings are now home to visitor centres and attractions, both celebrating his work and related issues.

A good starting point is The Lighthouse, which was previously the home of the Glasgow Herald newspaper. Now housing the Centre for Architecture, Design and the City, the centre contains interesting displays and interactive elements. Climb the tower, with its spiral staircase, and gain fantastic rooftop views of Glasgow.

One of the earliest buildings designed by Mackintosh is The Martyrs’ School, commissioned in 1895. Although not strictly a museum, some rooms are open and can be explored, and the rest enjoyed from the outside. Inside the Hunterian Art Gallery, you’ll find the interiors of 6 Florentine Terrace, his home, cleverly reassembled, and The Willow Tree Tea Rooms, which were designed in 1903, are still open for tea today.

Other buildings Mackintosh buildings to look out for include the Daily Record Building, Ruchill Church Hall and Mackintosh Church. The Scotland Street School Museum was one of the last buildings designed by Charles. With leaded glass towers, a grand tiled entrance hall and period classrooms, the museum is free to visit.
