If you’re a foodie at heart, then you may well be intrigued to know that Genoa is where pesto was first invented. Not surprisingly, you will find pesto on the menu in many of the local restaurants, especially served with pasta, on pizzas and with the flat bread, focaccia.

As well as an abundance of good food, Genoa is blessed with some fantastic museums too. At the Palazzo Bianco Gallery you can get a glimpse of an impressive collection of paintings, dating back to the 16th century, including works by some of the best Genoese painters. The Museum of Sant’Agostino, which operates from a 13th century Augustine convent, is a must for history lovers, and you’ll find sculptures and paintings amidst its offerings. To make the most of the museums, look out for the museum card – La card dei Musei. Once purchased, it allows entry to a number of museums, plus the aquarium.
