The French-speaking city of Geneva, in the south-west of Switzerland, is symbolized by the tallest fountain in Europe, the Jet d’Eau, shooting a jet of water 460 feet into the air at a speed of 125 miles per hour.

Geneva’s Old Town (Vieille Ville) dates back to the Middle Ages, when its focal point was a market place at Place du Bourg-de-Four. Nearby, the façade of Maison Tavel, the oldest residence in Geneva and now a museum of daily life, is adorned with human and animal heads sculpted from stone.

The modern international area of Geneva is home to more than 200 international organizations, including the European headquarters of the United Nations in the Palais des Nations and the international headquarters of the Red Cross.
