Founded by Anglo-Norman settlers in the 12th century, the city of Galway is located at the start of the River Corrib in the west of Ireland. It’s in County Galway, the second largest county in the country, and is a region populated by stunning landscapes, rivers and historic buildings.

The city is a busy, thriving centre, where past and present blend together well. Traditionally, it was a port town and key centre for both fishing and trading, to countries such as France, Spain and India. The signature ship of the city, which was widely used in the past, is the Galway Hooker. Today you’ll see the special boats appear at water festivals and other celebrations.

The Claddagh area of the city is based on the word ‘cladach’, which means a stony beach. It’s where fishing has been conducted for years and the fishermen of Claddagh traditionally ensured the city had ample supplies of fish and sold it in the square, next to the Spanish Arch. The area is sung about in the famous song ‘Galway Bay,’ but it might be the Claddagh Ring where you’ve heard mention of the name. It’s a piece of traditional jewellery where two hands are joined together to form a heart, with a crown on top and it plays an important part in the legend and mythology of the city.

St Nicholas, one of the largest medieval churches in Ireland can be found in the city centre, along with ruins of the city walls, an impressive cathedral and the National University of Ireland.
