When is a discount carrier not a discount carrier?
When it’s GOL, Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes.
Goal Intelligent Airlines, translated from the Portuguese, is Brazil’s second-largest airline, operating a fleet of ultra-modern Boeing 737s. Besides the obvious places, e.g. Rio and Brasilia, GOL serves another 50 Brazilian destinations. This sounds like a lot, but the country’s area is roughly the same as the continental US! International destinations include Argentina, Peru and Chile.
Whilst bargain fares (Sao Paulo – Rio return around US$100) and cramped, uncomfortable seats are straight from the low-cost handbook, the similarities end there. GOL has no hidden extras, 23kg baggage allowance included, and friendly attendants provide free snacks and soft drinks on board. What’s more, there’s a frequent flyer club, and now an ‘Interline’ agreement with American Airlines, allowing passengers to book trips from the US all the way through to any GOL destination.
