Florence is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The problem is that this is no secret. Millions come each year to enjoy its stunning renaissance architecture, visit its galleries and museums bulging with masterpieces by Botticelli, Donatello and Michelangelo, and promenade across the shop-lined Ponte Vecchio. Being prepared for the crowds is crucial to enjoying Florence, but with a little planning and research, the hordes will not interfere with your holiday.

Remember, many visitors are in the city for the day only, so an evening stroll offers an opportunity to absorb the atmosphere without having to fight through the crowds. And during the daytime, take time out for gelati and coffee in a less populated but quietly authentic side-street, gaze at the Ponte Vecchio from an undiscovered spot along the river, and relax in the greenery of the Boboli Gardens.

No-one will want to miss the main sights, however. The oft-photographed Duomo, as well as the Campanile and Baptistry, are a starting point for many visitors. The Uffizi gallery is considered one of Italy’s best, while Michelangelo’s “David” is housed in the Accademia Gallery. And don’t miss the Piazza della Signoria, with its Palazzo Vecchio and Loggia dei Lanzi. For take-home mementos, the leather market in the San Lorenzo area is hard to beat – you may find things better or cheaper elsewhere, but you won’t be able to nonchalantly mention “I just picked this up in Florence.”
