Ethiopia Overview

Located in the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia is one of the oldest countries in the world, dating back 3.2 million years. Lucy, the oldest complete hominid skeleton was discovered at Hadar, Ethiopia and rests in Addis Ababa’s National Museum. Ethiopians also believe that their home is the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant. Although torn by famine, disease and conflicts, the vast majority of the 77 diverse ethnic groups, each speaking their own language, seek peace. Ethiopia offers adventure for intrepid travelers who are not looking for luxuries. Like stepping into the pages of National Geographic, it is a stunning land of high plateaus and rugged mountains sweeping down to lush valleys and Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile. However, Ethiopia’s geographic rewards come with risks. The U.S. State Department strongly advises Americans traveling to Ethiopia to exercise vigilance and avoid travel to areas of unrest. Medical facilities are also very limited in Addis Ababa and inadequate outside the city. Go!
