As soon as you set eyes on the city of Edinburgh, it’s obvious that it’s oozing in history. Ancient buildings and traditional granite buildings exist alongside modern additions, with old and new successfully blending together.

The huge castle rises high above the city’s skyline, perched on now extinct volcanic rock. Commanding magnificent views in all directions, the inside of the castle offers a look at its long history, and there are regular guided tours. Between the castle, and Holyroodhouse, the royal residence, is the aptly named Royal Mile. Holyroodhouse is the Queen’s official residence in Scotland, and contains apartments where Mary, Queen of Scots, used to live. Although just outside Edinburgh, the historic Rosslyn Chapel is also worth a visit, especially if you’re a fan of the Da Vinci Code.

Fans of Scottish literature, old and new, can enjoy exploring the city’s links with writers and books. It was here in a cafe, for example, that J K Rowling penned, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” One interesting guided tour, called the Macallan Edinburgh Literary Pub tour, visits many pubs linked to writers.

The city boasts a wide range of museums and visitors attractions, so you’re sure to find something that appeals, whatever your taste. The People’s Story, which uses oral history, reminiscences and writing to portray the life and work of ordinary people in Edinburgh, from the 18th century until today, is particularly worth a visit.

Finally, if you’re a smoker, take note - as of March 26th 2006, smoking is banned in all enclosed public places in Scotland.
