Sunshine, shopping, stylish bars, top-notch hotels, world class events, spa treatments, and vibrant nightlife – all this and more can be found in Dubai, a state of the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East.

Although shopping is tax-free in Dubai, it is still acceptable to haggle, as the locals do, to gain a further discount of between 20% and 50%. Choose from many types of gold jewelry at the Deira Gold Souq, or browse a variety of goods from Indian sweets to souvenirs in the Bur Dubai Souq.

Annual events include the Dubai Shopping Festival, which starts in mid-January and incorporates the International Jazz Festival; the Dubai Tennis Championships beginning in late February; and the Dubai Desert Classic golf tournament in March.

A desert safari is a popular evening excursion. The exhilarating ride up and down sand dunes in a four wheel-drive vehicle takes you to a desert camp, where you can ride a camel, take part in sand boarding, have a henna tattoo, or simply sit and watch the sunset. The evening’s entertainment includes belly dancing and a barbeque.

Although Dubai is a fairly liberal Muslim state, it is still important to be sensitive to the local culture by observing the restrictions on alcoholic drinks, not wearing shorts or revealing clothing in public places, and not taking photographs of Arab women.
