By iCheapAirfares Staff: The Dominican Republic is the 2nd largest country in the Caribbean, in terms of area and population, and is a land of contrasts. There are breath-taking beaches, lush jungles, the highest mountain (Pico Duarte) in the Caribbean, a multitude of full service hotels, but outside the beaten tourist track, there is poverty and occasional civil unrest.

Initially a Spanish colony, the Dominican Republic was subsequently under French control until 1844 when it became independent. French Creole is even spoken by some of its citizens and is of course the main language (along with French) of its border neighbor, Haiti.

The Dominican Republic is known for its all-inclusive resorts and tends to appeal to families on a budget, as well as younger travelers. It’s easy to get to the Dominican Republic – five major airports offer nonstop scheduled flights from the United States. The Dominican Republic remains one of the cheapest destinations in the Caribbean – a glut of over 30,000 hotel rooms on the island tends to make prices competitive.

Sports and outdoor activities are abundant in the Dominican Republic. In addition to the usual offerings, visitors can go “kiteboarding” in the coastal town of Cabarete, which bills itself as the adventure capital of the world. One of the biggest attractions on the island is baseball, where games in the Winter League regularly attract 20,000 spectators and the names of Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martinez and Albert Pujols are treated with reverence.
