With an area of 16,630 square miles and a population of just under 5.5 million, Denmark is a fairly small country. The distant countries of Greenland and the Faroe Islands also belong to Denmark.

Although attached to the continent of Western Europe, Denmark is a part of Scandinavia and its culture and history are distinctively Scandinavian. Visit one of the Viking museums, such as the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde or the open-air Den Gamle By Museum in Aarhus, for an insight into the country’s past.

The major cities are the capital, Copenhagen (København) and Aarhus (Århus), with Denmark’s largest cathedral, the gothic Domkirke.

Kronborg Slot in Elsinore (Helsingør) is a majestic walled castle by the sea that inspired Shakespeare to use it as the setting for his famous play, Hamlet. Dating back to 1585, its interior and exterior are remarkably well-preserved.

Explore the quaint cobbled streets and the medieval buildings of Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark, established around 700 AD as a Viking trading post in the south-west of the country.

Outside the cities and towns, there are a large number of secluded, unpolluted beaches. Look out for the Blue Flag, which indicates that the water has passed several strict environmental tests. Cycling, fishing, canoeing and camping are popular outdoor pursuits in the varied Danish countryside of hills, moorland, woods, lakes and meandering rivers.
