Darwin
By Roz Andrews: Named after the scientist, Charles Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory is a remote, tropical, multi-cultural city.
Many of Darwin’s older buildings were destroyed by Cyclone Tracy in 1974 and replaced by modern, cyclone-proof architecture. Some of the pre-1974 buildings still standing include Browns Mart, originally built in 1883; Giese Residence, an example of 1920s architecture; and the Esplanade Gallery, dating from 1937.
Visit the Northern Territory Museum of Arts and Sciences to gain an insight into the history and culture of the region. Exhibits include Aboriginal bark paintings and archaeological discoveries from the Pacific Islands.
Darwin has the highest per-capita beer consumption in the world. The local beer bottle, known as a ‘Darwin Stubbie,’ holds more than two pints! Every July, boats made from empty beer cans are launched into the waters of Mindil Beach at the Beer Can Regatta.
On the menu in Darwin is ‘buff and barra,’ consisting of buffalo fillet steak and freshly caught barramundi fish.
If you are feeling adventurous, Darwin is a good base for exploring the outback. An organized tour is undoubtedly the easiest way of doing this and there are a variety of companies that will take you to see the natural wonders, wildlife and traditional Aboriginal way of life in the outback.
