New visitors to Dalat (or Da Lat) may wonder why there’s a mini version of the Eiffel Tower here, as it seems a bit out of place. However, once you learn that it was French colonists who founded Dalat and used to call the area ‘Little Paris’ or ‘Paris of the East’, it all makes begins to make sense. The architecture here is quite mixed, with some quite grand colonial villas originally build by the French founders, interspersed with more quirky wooden chalets.

Dalat is a major stop on the Vietnamese tourist trail and it’s also a popular haunt with honeymooners. Part of the attraction lies in its fantastic location and scenery – it’s a high altitude area, in the southern central highlands of Vietnam, and boasts clear mountain air, waterfalls, lakes and panoramic views. For exploring, mountain bikes or motorbikes are widely available and the latter can be hired with a driver.
