Mountains separate the north and south coasts of the long Greek island of Crete. Take an 11-mile hike to experience the spectacular scenery of the Samariá Gorge. On the way, you may see Cretan wild goats, the abandoned village of Samariá, and the natural Iron Gates where the track narrows to just nine feet between two high rock walls.

Visit caves that were the setting for mythological stories. Among the most famous is Diktian, where the god Zeus is said to have been born.

The Archaeological Museum in the capital, Irákleio, displays a large collection of artifacts from the Minoan civilization on Crete more than 3,000 years ago. Many of the exhibits, including well-preserved frescoes, were recovered from the nearby ruins of the Palace of Knosós.
