Cozumel is actually an island as its name originally meant “Island of Swallows” and today it is Mexico’s largest and most populous one. Cozumel, along with nearby Cancun, unashamedly takes advantage of cruise ship passengers and has an excellent selection of hotels, restaurants, shopping and nightlife to suit all tastes. There are plenty of shops selling jewelry and duty-free items. Most of the larger hotels on the island offer deals for package vacations and can also organize diving trips.

If you want some peace and quiet on the island, head to Cozumel’s undeveloped eastern coast, where you can swim and laze on beautiful secluded beaches. A jeep is the preferred method of transportation throughout the island.

Over 30 beautiful coral reefs with towering walls lie in the blue waters off the west coast of Cozumel, making the island a mecca for divers and ranking it as one of the top five diving destinations in the world. The reefs attract a profusion of brightly colored fish, sea turtles and other creatures. If you don’t dive, there is a wide selection of other water sports and beach activities to partake in.
