Cork Overview

By Rachel Newcombe

The city of Cork is the third largest in Ireland after Dublin and Belfast. It’s located in the largest county in Ireland, called County Cork, which is in the south-western corner of the country and covers almost 3000 square miles in total.

On any visit to Cork, you’ll find yourself frequently crossing bridges. This is because the River Lee flows through the city in two main channels and, in a similar way to Venice, the city is built upon the waters and on an island in the River Lee. The city has its own unique charm and was designated a European Capital of Culture in 2005. It can easily be explored on foot, although it can be a bit hilly!

You can’t miss St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, with its French-Gothic architecture and fantastic example of a triple spire. The site where it stands has a long history and a monastery is believed to have been founded there in the 7th century by St. Fin Barre. Cork City Gaol was once the home of prisoners in the 19th century, but has now become a fascinating visitor attraction.

A well known landmark is the statue of Father Theobald Matthew, a 19th century Apostle of Temperance, which can be found at the end of Patrick Street, near Patrick’s Bridge. The English Market is close by too and you’ll find that it sells fresh produce of all types and varieties. It has existed since 1788 and was restored following a bad fire in 1980.

Only 5 miles away is Blarney Castle, where you’ll find the famous Blarney Stone. Legend has it that those who kiss the stone will receive the gift of eloquence and you, too, could give it a go! Go!
