Christchurch
By Roz Andrews: Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island of New Zealand, is an ideal base for exploring the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
The imposing Christ Church Cathedral was built from local stone and native New Zealand wood. Admire its impressive interior and climb up to the top of its tower to enjoy panoramic views of the city, the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps in the distance.
The city’s many green, open spaces provide ample opportunities for recreation and relaxation. Victoria Square, in the city center, includes a floral clock made from more than 5,000 plants; and statues of Queen Victoria and Captain Cook.
The Avon River flows through the center of the city and you can take a relaxing trip on a punt or walk along its grassy, tree-lined banks. The Bridge of Remembrance with its high stone archway commemorates local servicemen.
In the Botanic Gardens, you will find a peacock fountain, a formal rose garden, a water garden, and glasshouses containing tropical plants. On the edge of the Botanic Gardens is Canterbury Museum with exhibitions on such diverse subjects as Antarctic exploration and extinct birds.
Many nearby places of interest, such as Hanmer Springs, the Waipara Vineyards and Banks Peninsula, can be easily reached on day trips. Take the TranzAlpine railway across the Southern Alps to view the spectacular scenery of Arthur’s Pass.
