By Lynne Christen: Founded over 3,000 years ago, Chongqing was historically a major sea trading port until the mid-20th century when industrialization changed its course. It is known for the highest reserves of coal in China and the world’s second largest strontium reserve used for making ceramics/glass products, pyrotechnics, paint pigments, fluorescent lights and medicines. Ironically, it is also recognized for the world’s largest public bathroom featuring over 1,000 uniquely shaped toilets. As a tourism destination, Chongqing is the starting point for Yangtze River cruises exploring the Three Gorges: Qutang, Wu and Xiling. Don’t wait too long to view the Three Gorges. In 1995 the Chinese government began work on the world’s largest dam which will eventually submerge much of the stunning scenery, cultural sites and villages along the Gorges. Best time to visit is early fall during the Harvest Moon Festival. Avoid summer travel when Chongqing is known as “the furnace city” and fog and rain frequently shroud the area. Go! |
