Tourism in China was unheard of 25 years ago, but ever since the end of Chairman Mao and the Cultural Revolution in 1976, the country has been more accommodating to visitors. Fast population increases are fueling a consumer boom that is modernizing the big cities especially Shanghai, however 70% of the Chinese still work in agriculture.

Socialist ideals are still evident as many commercial enterprises remain state-owned or heavily state-influenced. Any portion along the 2,000 mile stretch of the Great Wall is worth seeing, however most visitors travel to the wall from Beijing.

The construction of the wall began in 200 BC under Qin Shi Huangdi. Its closely spaced signal towers communicated with each other via smoke, drums and bells and served as forts and living quarters. In addition to protecting against intruders, the wall allowed for the quick transport of troops throughout the country.

As you walk up the steep steps carrying nothing but your camera and a bag of trail mix, try to imagine what it must have been like for fully clad soldiers traveling dozens of miles per day atop this wall throughout the ages. New Year Festival (late January or early February) is a popular time to visit. Most offices and shops close down in the days leading up to this celebration.

In Beijing, The Forbidden City, which consists of a grouping architecturally significant buildings that constitute the imperial court, and Tiananmen Square (Square of the Gate of Heavenly Peace) are notable attractions.
