By Roz Andrews: Chiang Rai, in the north of Thailand on the Kok River, is the ideal base for trekking along the Mekong River or taking a boat trip to the neighboring country of Laos.

Thailand’s most worshipped image, the emerald Buddha, was discovered at the Wat Phra Kaeo Temple in the fifteenth century. The original emerald Buddha is now in Bangkok but a replica is enshrined here.

Visit the Hilltribe Museum and Education Center to find out more about the tribes people who inhabit the surrounding area. Each tribe has its own language and culture, including music, crafts and jewelry.
