Providence,
Rhode Island
By Natasha Jervis: Providence is known as the Renaissance City and was voted ‘Best Place to Live in the East’ by Money Magazine. Many of the city’s attractions are located on the east side. The city has 12 colleges so if you’re looking for a quiet visit, think otherwise. Although loud and crowded at times, the college goers keep the city vibrant and young. History and real estate lovers can enjoy the gaslamp lined streets and old Victorian and Colonial homes dating back to the 1800’s. If you’re trying to give up smoking, bring your Nicorette at all times. This city hasn’t regulated smoking laws yet, so you might not enjoy smelling it as you eat your juicy steak. Art loving folk should visit the Rhode Island School of Design and Museum Art where they can see over 80,000 works of art. Take the kids to the Roger Williams Park Zoo which is the best zoo in New England. If you visit between May and October, you can see the Water Fire exhibit. Award winning artist, Barnaby Evans, lights up bonfires on three rivers in downtown as part of an urban sculpture. Tickle your taste buds and enjoy a dinner at Café Nuovo or Hemenwey’s Seafood Grill and Oyster Bar. If you can afford it, treat yourself to a room at the Providence Biltmore Hotel that recently had a million dollar makeover. They even have a Starbucks in the lobby for you coffee crazed people! Go!
