Houston, Texas

By Natasha Jervis: Visiting Houston can be mind boggling at times and you might leave with a few personal opinions. It can be a suffocating city with its high traffic and humidity, but also charming because of its Texan Pride and variety of nightly entertainment. The fact that Houston was the home of aviator, Howard Hughes is no surprise, because of his and the city’s eccentricities. Yeehaw! We struck oil! Houston discovered oil in 1901 and quickly prospered. If you’re into science and astronauts you might want to check out the NASA Johnson Space Station where you can take a historic trolley tour around this famous center. Houston…we have a problem! While seeing the first mission that transported Neil Armstrong might be a thrill, the center itself is out dated and could use a makeover. Check out Bayou Place where you’ll find loads of cool hang outs and eats. Try Houston’s top Italian restaurant Damian’s Cucina Italiana and tickle your taste buds. If you’re there when Spring approaches you might be able to catch the Houston International Festival that centers on Houston’s multicultural community. If you’re into shooting hoops or love watching a thriving game of basketball, check out the Toyota Center and catch the Houston Rockets battle it out. Go!

A Hot, but Classy City
Ok, so traffic is crazy in Houston and it can be toasty in the summer, but with those two cons out of the way, this city if fun, and friendly. There is air conditioning everywhere and we just stayed within these areas during the hotter days. The beaches are close and only a short drive away and the theatre, and museum districts are top notch. I took my son to the zoo where we saw a large variety of common and rare animals. We also played frisbee in Memorial and Hermann parks and had a picnic. It’s a classy city with lots of shopping, dining, and attractions for the family. My family had a great time when we went and we are planning another trip for March when it’s a bit cooler.

Better than you think.
When most people think of Houston, they think of hot humid mess. Luckily it's only hot and humid for about 3 months out of the year. Spring and Fall hovers around 80 degrees. Perfect weather for outdoor activities. Winters are also very mild and rarely gets below 40 at night. Houston is huge! It has a very vibrant downtown with lots of culture. Houston has one of the largest art and theatre district in the U.S. It also has every major professional and college sports so if you're into sports, it's a good place to be. Beaches are only about 40 minutes away and there's even surfing in Galveston though the waves aren't very big. Houston has a lot of wealthy people so there are a lot of high end stores. If you're into shopping this is a good city for you. Traffic can be pretty bad in Houston because alot of people live in the burbs surrounding downtown. Downtown though has a great little rail system and awesome bus system as well. Go have fun in Houston, Texas!!!
