Shhh!! Don’t tell anyone how great we have it here in Oregon. We don’t want to be overrun by tourists and easterners wanting to move here. Too late, the word is out. We all know that Oregon is one of the most scenic locations in the country. The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument has specimens of plants and animals from over 40 million years ago. This monument consists of Painted Hills, Sheep Rock, and Clarno Unit, all three units breathtaking in their color striations and rock shapes cut by glaciers. There are five highways, or Scenic Byways, that give you a glance at the Oregon of the past, as far back as the prehistoric days and the geological formations, up to the pioneer days – Blue Mountain, Elkhorn, Journey Through Time, Hells Canyon, and High Desert Scenic Byways. It is vital that you make sure to fill your gas tank before starting on any of these journeys. Go!
