Fort Lauderdale Hollywood Intl Airport (FLL)

Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) is fully loaded with domestic low-fare carriers, including JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, AirTran, Allegiant and Frontier, thus providing many opportunities for deals. In fact, Spirit Airlines uses FLL as one its hubs, or “bases”, flying direct to over 30 cities, including San Jose (Costa Rica), Guatemala City and Panama City.

JetBlue flies non-stop from FLL to nearly 20 destinations, including Cancun, Santo Domingo and Nassau. Southwest jets direct from Fort Lauderdale to 20 cities, including Las Vegas, Chicago and Long Island. Allegiant Air considers FLL a "focus city", jetting straight to six smaller airports, such as Chattanooga and Knoxville. AirTran shoots straight to eight airports from Fort Lauderdale.

Fort Lauderdale also has an international discount carrier in Canadian-based WestJet, who flies to the most major cities in Canada. Another Canadian airline, Air Transat, flies direct to Toronto and Montreal.

Fort Lauderdale Airport is a great alternate airport for travel to the Miami area. On a recent trip with three friends to Miami Beach, we saved a combined $300 on airline tickets by flying into Fort Lauderdale, instead of Miami (MIA). The cab ride from FLL to South Beach was about $55 each way, while the cab ride from Miami (MIA) to South Beach would have been about $30. Fort Lauderdale Airport is also the closest airport to Port Everglades, a popular cruise ship port that embarks to the Caribbean Sea.

The four airports within a two-hour drive from FLL are Miami (MIA), 25 miles, West Palm Beach (PBI), 48 miles, Naples (APF), 105 miles, and Fort Myers (RSW), 131 miles away.

Fort Lauderdale Overview

By Natasha Jervis

Fort Lauderdale ImageFort Lauderdale will take your breath away with its canals and neighborhoods. It used to have a spring break party image, but now has been viewed as the ‘Venice of America’. When visiting this fabulous city, don’t forget to travel around in water taxis. They are fun and they can get you around easily as you tour the city. All day travel passes are reasonable, and you can ride all the way down to South Beach. Catch the ocean breeze and take some photos of the Florida coast!

Fort Lauderdale has two snazzy neighborhoods that visitors should not miss. Las Olas Riverfront is colorful, and it has varieties of entertainment for kids and adults. You will find movie theatres such as IMAX, flea markets, and games for kids. Visitors will also find open air restaurants all along the waterfront, which can be an excellent addition to a romantic night out with your sweetheart. Visiting music lovers will enjoy live music at the recommended Himarshee Bar and Grill on 2nd Street.

Las Olas Boulevard is jam-packed with boutique shops, restaurants, and trendy cafes. Back in 1917, this boulevard used to just be a dirt road that would allow visitors and residents to travel back and forth from Fort Lauderdale Beach. Don’t miss the new gondola service! Il Serniore Contento built the first gondola in Venice 100 years ago. Now, Il Serniore Contento is offering the same service on the Fort Lauderdale waterways. What a way to spend your vacation! Go!

Fort Lauderdale Traveler Reviews

Las Olas and Ocean Drive Rock!
Fort Lauderdale was so awesome! Our cruise came into port and we stayed there for a day. It may have only been one day, but we hung out around Beach Place in the day, spent some time on the beach and then walked along Ocean Drive. There is a warm feeling about the community and people in Fort Lauderdale. People are so laid back compared to other parts of Florida and you get a sense that anyone can fit in. We then ate dinner at Mangos on East Las Olas Boulevard and enjoyed some live music, dinner and dancing before re-boarding our cruise. Truly a fun time!
