Atlanta Overview

For a taste of Southern hospitality, head for Atlanta, Georgia appropriately called “The Big Peach.” Where the summer humidity is so thick that I felt I was treading water when I first stepped off the plane – with beads of sweat starting races down my forehead. Atlanta is a haven for history aficionados, art and music lovers and families. Atlanta plays host to history museums such as the dioramic Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum as well as the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Sweet Auburn District, King’s birthplace. Piedmont Park in Midtown was the site of the Piedmont Exposition in 1887 where the first commercial motion picture in the US was shown. It is also the venue for several annual festivals including the monthly Atlanta Jazz Festival in May and the Georgia Shakespeare Festival between June and November. Atlanta boasts the famous movie palace Fox Theater, the largest arts center Woodruff Arts Center and The Atlanta Opera. For family fun, Atlanta has the largest aquarium in the world, Georgia Aquarium which is the home of white sharks and some 100,000 species of aquatic life. The World of Coca-Cola Museum, sure to be a hit, reopened recently and features the history of the soda drink, right next to the equally unique entertainment and shopping center Underground Atlanta, which is literally under downtown Atlanta. Fun for everyone! Go!
