Canberra
By Roz Andrews: Canberra is a young city, created in the early twentieth century as the capital of a united Australia.
The spring and the fall are the best seasons to visit Canberra, as the summer months are extremely hot and the winter is quite cold. A good way of getting around the city is to hire a bicycle and use the network of dedicated cycling tracks.
Canberra has perhaps the most interesting architecture in the whole of Australia. The modern Parliament House reflects the country’s diversity and symbolizes its landscape. It includes such features as an Aboriginal ceremonial pool surrounded by an Aboriginal mosaic; green marble pillars representing eucalyptus trees; hand-crafted wood paneling displaying native flora; and large tapestries and embroideries depicting Australian scenes.
Other public buildings worth visiting for their architectural features include the National Library and the Embassies, many of which are built in the architectural style of the country they represent. Particularly striking examples are the Thai Embassy and the Papua New Guinea Embassy with its decorated triangular façade.
The majestic tree-lined Anzac Drive connects Parliament House with the Australian War Memorial, a peaceful, moving tribute to Australians who have lost their lives in conflicts around the world.
Panoramic views of Canberra can be enjoyed from the Black Mountain, where you can dine in the revolving restaurant at the Telstra Tower.
