By Rachel Newcombe: Egypt’s capital is one of the largest cities in the Middle East and Africa and lies on the River Nile. It’s a city packed with history dating back centuries, but is also a busy modern location. The Egyptian Museum is a good starting place for discovering the history, but for a true insight, you must go and see the breathtaking pyramids and the sphinx.
Getting around the city can be a bit hair-raising at times, thanks to the erratic nature of local drivers – including camel drivers. To hear traditional music and watch folk dancers, head to the El-Ghuriya area in the centre of Cairo.
There are lots of Egyptian cuisine specialities to try and you’ll find many pavement cafes dotted around. One such dish is Koshray, one of the most popular traditional dishes, and consists of a spicy tomato, chilli and garlic sauce with chickpeas, black lentils, rice, onions and pasta. Go! |
