Cabo San Lucas Overview By iCheapAirfares Staff Cabo San Lucas, or Cabo, is the epitome of a once small fishing village that transformed into a huge resort. The author John Steinbeck chartered a boat and sailed there in the 1940s and found a small ramshackle town frequented by deep sea fishermen, with a rather “rough and tumble”atmosphere. Today the contrast could not be greater. Cabo is home to many of Mexico’s most luxurious resorts, sprawling hotels, luxurious private villas and condominiums which line the coast for miles.
The area around Cabo is well known for its world class golf courses, including six championship courses (three of which were designed by Jack Nicklaus), and has plans for several more. Cabo is still the place to go for excellent deep-sea fishing and scuba diving, although the rather rowdy atmosphere captured by Steinbeck has pretty much left, with the exception of several of the older bars. Another thing you have to do in Cabo - just to say you did it - is visit the 200 foot natural stone arch which marks land’s end on the 800 mile long Baja peninsula. Go!
