Brussels Airfares
Brussels
By Carolyn Batt: Brussels is often unfairly maligned as boring because of its large population of bureaucrats, connected to the city’s role as headquarters of the European Union. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. The Belgian capital boasts a beautiful central square, stunning Art Nouveau architecture and some of the finest restaurants in Europe (perhaps in part because of its bureaucrat population!). Lovers of comic strips will be in heaven, for this city was also home to Herge (Remi Georges), creator of Tintin.
Herge and other comic strip artists are honored at the Belgian Center for Comic Strip Art, and by a comic strip trail around the town which includes 30 walls covered with larger-than-life characters.
Belgium’s fame as a producer of melt-in-the-mouth chocolates is best tested by tasting for yourself, and the city is positively littered with chocolatiers. Devotees of the cocoa bean will also seek out the Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate, while the Museum of Belgian Brewers offers an insight into another well-known export.
For views and something a little different, head to the Atomium. This bizarre molecular-shaped structure, built for the 1958 world fair, stands 335 feet high. It now houses rotating exhibitions.
