By Carolyn Batt: Brugge, or Bruges, is a place to indulge yourself. And if that means falling wholeheartedly for “tourist traps” such as a boat cruise around the canals, then so be it, because this is the best way to soak in the romantic atmosphere. Even if you have climbed towers all round Europe, conquer the 366 step Belfry for a superb view of the medieval town. The bell-tower boasts 47 bells, weighing 27 tons, and special bell-ringings take place three times a week.
Round the corner, on the Burg, stands the Basilica of the Holy Blood, famed for its reliquary of “Holy Blood”. Also located on the Burg is the beautiful gothic city hall, dating back to the fourteenth century.
Bruges is one of those towns almost impossible to dislike. A stroll beside the canals or a meander through the cobbled streets is rewarded with picture-perfect scenes at every corner. Stop at one of the characterful beer-houses to sample Belgian brews, each served in their own distinct glass. Or visit De Halve Maan brewery where, after a tour and explanation of the brewing process, you can sample the delicious Brugse Zot (Bruges Lunatic). There is a broad spectrum of museums, with those dedicated to chocolate and diamonds at the luxury end, and the Beguine’s House - dedicated to the charitable religious women who worked with the sick and poor – at the other. Go!
