Brisbane
By Carolyn Batt: Brisbane, the laid-back capital of Queensland, straddles the eponymous Brisbane River, and offers a combination of colonial architecture, extensive parklands, and endless outdoor activities to match the sub-tropical climate.
Known as “Brissie” or “Bris Vegas” among locals, the city’s popular tourist activities include a visit to the XXXX Brewery, which has been brewing the famous Queensland beer for 125 years, and a cruise up the river to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.
The South Bank Parklands offer landscaped gardens, a swimming lagoon complete with sandy beach, picnic sites and restaurants. Built on the former site of the World Expo 1988, the precinct is popular amongst tourists and locals alike.
Active visitors may seek out the rockclimbing cliffs at Kangaroo Point, floodlit until midnight, but a leisurely stroll along one of the riverside walking tracks is also a good way to appreciate the city.
For a birds-eye view of Brisbane and its twisting river, drive to the Mt Coot-tha Lookout on Sir Samuel Griffith Drive, 15 minutes out of town.
North Stradbroke Island, an hour by ferry from town, makes a popular daytrip although accommodation is available for those able to stay longer. Migrating whales can be spotted from a number of vantage points on the island.
