Bologna Overview

By Rachel Newcombe
History is evident in the centre of Bologna and one unique historical and architectural highlight is the miles of porticos, or arcades, which link the streets.
In fact, there are over 45km of porticos which makes it possible to walk around and explore the centre without getting caught out by unexpected weather elements. The Portico of San Luca is the longest in the world and connects up to the Porta Saragozza, which is one of the 12 gates in the city first built in the Middle Ages.
The city has plenty of great eateries and restaurants and, of course, many places serving the dish which is partly named after Bologna – Bolognese sauce!
Bologna hosts various events and festivals throughout the year, including several annual events. For example, in December there’s usually the annual motor show, where you can see plenty of Lamborghini and Ferrari’s on display, and the Bologna Festival of classical music runs from March until October. Go!
