This lush Central American country is best known for three reasons – it borders the sparkling Caribbean Sea, it’s got acres of lush rainforest and it’s got a rich Mayan cultural history. All three of these elements make Belize a key point on the tourist trail (and cruise ship stopping points), although thankfully it has not (yet) been taken over by tacky tourist attractions.

Divers and snorkelers can explore the underwater ecosystem at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and, if they’re lucky, gain the opportunity to come get up close and personal with sharks and other sea creatures. Deep in the jungle, there’s Caracol, one of the major Mayan archaeological sites, plus other jungle tours and wildlife experiences to explore.

The vibrant Belize city takes you out of the natural jungle and into a lively city, but there are plenty of beaches for relaxation at the end of the day.
