By Rachel Newcombe: A trip to Bangkok isn’t complete without a visit to the famous Chatuchak market. It’s one of the largest markets in the world with up to 15,000 stalls littering the narrow alleyways and covering 35 acres of land. For shoppers and bargain hunters, it can seem like heaven!
The market stalls begin to be assembled at 7am and, unless you enjoy huge crowds – even up to 200,000+ at peak times – then getting there when they open at 9am is a must. This is especially so during the hotter months of April and May, as the heat coupled with a crowd can be unpleasant if you’re not a fan of hot weather.
The market is truly awash with stalls selling anything and everything, from books, artefacts, wooden gifts, candles, antiques and silverware, to homeware, ceramics, plants, shoes and even animals. With the market so huge, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and lose your sense of direction, but it is possible to pick up a map if you like. There’s masses to see and many bargains to be had, and it’s a particularly good place to pick up traditional Thai crafts and artefacts. However, beware about claims that products are antiques, as the market is known to be home to fakes!
The easiest way to get to Chatuchak is by using the Skytrain, as you can get off at Mo Chit station and walk from there. Don’t worry about not finding it – just follow the crowds! Go!
