By Pam Bruno: What better way to experience the culture, history, and natural beauty of Austria than for free? Starting off in Innsbruck, there is the free hiking program. See the majestic mountains with a certified guide. In the summertime there is the famous Salzburg Festival, where classical concerts are projected onto huge screens in the Kapitalplace. There are also jazz concerts, rock bands, classical and opera concerts. In many cases it is possible to get a reduced price on tickets by standing during the concerts. The Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna offers free admission on Saturdays. And on October 26, the National Holiday of Austria, most museums are free. For sheer inspiration, attend a mass with the Vienna Boys Choir, held every Sunday in the Hofburg Palace, Schweizerhof. It is not free, but worth the price of admission. Another exciting venue is the Vienna Mozart Concerts held every summer through October. The concerts are performed in period costume, re-creating the feel and appearance of the performances held during Mozart’s lifetime. See Austria travel deals!

Linzer Tortes - Mmmm Even though Austria’s breathtaking views of the Alps may be reminiscent of Switzerland, or of Germany with its castles and forests, Austria is very much its own country. It seems to be saturated in the Masters of classical music. In the summertime, I loved walking through the parks of Vienna with students practicing their various instruments. The evening concerts in the park transported me to another era, where Mozart himself entertained the audiences of Vienna. My travels to any country would not be complete without the usual stops for souvenirs. I found that the best gifts to bring back to my family were the world-famous dessert, Linzer Tortes, a pie shaped lattice crust of nuts, sugar, butter, and spices, filled with a special raspberry jam. How popular was I when I arrived home with what was left! By iCheapAirfares User
