With a culture that is steeped in a past where the boundaries between mythology and fact have become blurred, it's not unexpected for you to find many glimpses of this ancient civilization co-existing with modern day Athens.

The most well-known of Greece's landmarks is the Acropolis. With its Parthenon standing high above Athens, and noticeable from almost anywhere in the city, the Acropolis is somewhere you visit on your trip to Greece, even if you aren't that interested in history and ancient buildings! There's more to the Acropolis than just one building however, Acropolis actually means "high city" and so there are several other things to see apart from the Parthenon, such as the Temple of Athena Nike and the Acropolis Museum. In the Greek heat, climbing to the Acropolis and then walking amongst the ruins and artifacts can be tiring so go early in the morning when it's cooler.

Back down in Athens, there are plenty of other museums to explore if you want to escape the blistering heat. From art to artifacts - ancient and more modern, there's a museum to cater for every taste. If you prefer your "art" a little more green, take a wander around the National Gardens with its ornamental ponds and botanical museum - and children's playground! One "must see" evening activity is the "Son et Lumiere", a sound and light show on the Hill of the Pnyx.

No trip to Greece would be complete without spending some time on its beautiful beaches. Athens has some lovely beaches, which are located in the resort-rich, Glyfada region.
