For an authentic insight into Ankara, head for the Old Town, near the citadel, which is crammed with old houses (the oldest, traditional ones were made from wood and clay), shops and craftspeople selling their wares. In amongst the usual souvenirs for tourists, you’ll find some real gems, like locally made crafts, antique shops and carpet makers and traders. Textiles used to be what Ankara was most well known for and some carpet sellers still make their products from hand.

As far as local cuisine goes, there’s a host of eateries serving up traditional Turkish delights, plus a few international restaurants too, especially on the other side of town. It’s not to everyone’s taste, but Ishkembe – or tripe soup – is a local delicacy and is claimed to be a hangover cure, so if you’ve indulged too much the night before, you could always brave it and give it a go!
