One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Amman, the capital city of Jordan, dates back to the Stone Age. During the 20th century, the city’s growth skyrocketed when Palestinian and Iraqi refugees settled there. Today, sunlight radiates off this city of white stone houses spread across 19 hillsides. The ancient Citadel and ruins of the Temple of Hercules perch above the 5,000 seat Roman Theater and Nymphaeum. Stoll King Hussein’s Gardens and view his amazing car collection at the Automobile Museum. Like a chapter from 1001 Arabian Nights, the Souq (Old Downtown) is a treat for the senses. The air is filled with the pungent aromas of roasting kabobs, heady spice markets and rich Arabian coffee. A profusion of colorful market stalls overflow with bargains for treasure hunters. Heads Up: Get visas prior to travel from the Jordan Embassy to avoid horrendously long lines at the Amman Queen Alia International Airport. Go!
