By Roz Andrews: Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, is a lively cultural center in a pleasant setting with broad, tree-lined avenues, elegant architecture, and green, open spaces.

Many of the city’s attractions are clustered on the North Terrace. The South Australian Museum houses the largest collection of Aboriginal exhibits in the world, while Australian, European and Asian works of art are on display in the Art Gallery of South Australia.

The Adelaide Festival Center is renowned for its acoustics and incorporates a theater, concert hall, and outdoor amphitheater. It is the venue for the biennial Adelaide Festival of Arts.

The River Torrens meanders through tranquil parkland dotted with gum trees, separating Adelaide’s compact city center from its suburbs.

Take the tram from the city center to Glenelg to bathe on white sands that continue for miles. Dine on a replica of HMS Buffalo, the ship that transported the first English settlers to South Australia. Everything is authentic, down to the pewter tankards and tableware.

Just outside the city, the Adelaide Hills are particularly beautiful. Drive up winding country roads to discover restaurants and pubs with breath-taking views of the city.

Three wine regions within easy traveling distance of Adelaide are the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. McLaren Vale is home to many small, independent ‘boutique winemakers,’ producing a variety of wines from port to sparkling white. Go!
