South Africa’s 1Time is practically a socialist airline, committed to empowering the community through job opportunities and more accessible ticket prices. They operate a fleet of around 10 MD-80 variants from Johannesburg to coastal destinations such as Durban and Cape Town. The airline only has one route outside the domestic market (but what a route!) to exotic Zanzibar, Tanzania.

1Time’s slogan is “More Nice, Less Price”. First impression of their website is that “less price” is relative to premium carriers. However, customer service is generally excellent and, providing checked baggage stays within the 20kg allowance, there are no hidden charges.

On board, leather seats are split 3/2 either side of the aisle, offering above average comfort and legroom. There are free activity packs for children, and the in-flight menu won’t break the bank. Beer is around US$1.50, coffee a dollar, and a decent sandwich US$2.
